Matching Your Tie

Get your Colour Right

Starting simple, colour. A General rule for this is that your tie should be darker than your shirt. It should stand out against your chest and draw attention to the face you are wearing a tie.  What is the point in wearing a tie if it literally fades into the background.

Matching your tie with the suit itself can be a little trickier. Generally, you should aim for the tie to be around the same tone as your jacket and trousers. But this doesn’t work for lighter suits, where you should go darker.

Judge each case individually, but keep colours similar

Stick with the rule of two. Your shirt and suit could be patterned, or your shirt and tie. But NEVER wear a suit, tie and shirt that are all patterned. Your outfit will look far to busy!

Tie Width

A process that isn’t thought through too often. Matching the size of your tie to the style of your suit is another important step. However, thankfully after all the loop holes and expectations in the colour department. this one is rather cut and dry.

If your suit is slim fit and tightly tailored, go for a skinnier tie. If is is wide lapelled or double breasted, go for something wide.

The bigger your suit, the bigger your ties. Simple
